OPEN A RUBY LANE SHOP – $75 SET-UP FEE WAIVED THROUGH OCTOBER 15!
For many, the number 13 conjures-up images of bad luck. Few buildings acknowledge they have a 13th floor, and many superstitious people stay locked in their houses on Friday the 13th. But all of us at Ruby Lane are excited to celebrate our 13th year in business. And August is the official month we opened, so we decided to offer a special promotion to sellers who want to join us during this period.
Special Promotion – Set-Up Fee Waived!
As part of our Lucky 13 Anniversary, we are launching a special promotion: Open a shop and the $75 set-up fee is waived. This special limited time promotion is on now, through October 15, 2011.
Why Open A Shop?
Ruby Lane is one-stop shopping for antiques & art, vintage collectibles and jewelry. With our considerable, highly targeted visitor traffic, your Ruby Lane shop will get noticed. And Ruby Lane is known for its excellent quality standards and for its ease of use for both buyers and sellers.

Join Us!
It is really that simple - new shop owners who go to open a Ruby Lane shop, will not be charged a set-up fee. But remember, October 15, 2011, is the last day you will be able to set-up your shop for Free. You must
request to open by October 15. Your shop must meet our guidelines and be approved by our review staff.
Come and help us celebrate our Lucky 13. With more than 2,200 shops and 425,000 items, we invite you to tour Ruby Lane, and see why so many call it home, and a great place to shop and sell.
Here's what some of our current shop owners say they like about selling on Ruby Lane:
"The ease of setting up and keeping a shop. The picture uploads and the amount allowed. The wish lists and wish list e-mails."
"I have been a member since 2001, and have had a very positive experience. I have had buyers from all over the world, Japan, Spain, Germany to name a few. I believe that the high standards you require of the dealers is one of the most important things. These high standards give the customers confidence to buy."
"Speed, Photographs - amount and quality, Page colors - easy on the eyes "
"A classy site and quality merchandise. My customers seem to feel comfortable and 'safe' on Ruby Lane."
"Great 'brand' recognition; overall quality of merchandise; great visibility on Google search engine."

OLD CLOCKS ARE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY BY JACK BECKLUND OF THE POTTERY NUTS
Have you looked lately at the wonderful selection of old clocks on
Ruby Lane? I have, and it is impressive. Over the years, we've bought
and sold many clocks of all kinds, but ultimately the work required to
put some of them into working condition was above our pay grade, so
now we simply surround ourselves with them and enjoy. Currently, we
have six chiming clocks of assorted types in the house and no, they do
not all chime at the same time because they have individual
personalities and idiosyncracies. But we love them and each one has
earned a place in the family.
Sometimes, the purchase of an elderly clock is only the first step of a process that includes leveling for balance and adjusting for speed. We have a beautiful bracket clock made by Thomas Smith of London in about 1835 that we planned to place on a side table in the dining room. We balanced it and leveled it as best we could, then started it and waited. It ran a few minutes and stopped. We adjusted again with the same result. Over a period of several weeks, we tried everything. We were literally shimming it with individual sheets of paper. Nothing worked. It refused to run. We gave up and put it on top of a bookcase in the back hallway. In a short time, we heard its clear bell chime. I looked at Patti and she looked at me. It was the Smith bracket clock, running happily. That was a year ago. It has never stopped running and striking. We don't dare move it, however, so it sits out of sight in the back
hallway, where at least we can hear it chime.
There is a Seth Thomas wall clock in another hallway that plays St Michael's chimes and strikes the quarter hour, but only when it is exactly vertical. Needless to say, there are small nails in the wall to keep it that way. Then too, the chimes must be wound much more frequently than the strike or time. But it rewards us with musical interludes throughout the day.
My grandparents built a house in 1904 and placed a Seth Thomas beehive
clock on the dining room mantel. It ran there until 1961 and my
grandfather wound it every Sunday night before going to bed. Then it
sat in a closet, first my mother's and then mine, until 2003, when it
went in for major surgery. Since then, it has accompanied us through
the days, not without some strange clanks and thumps, but generally
keeping good time. Sure, the chime is off by an hour, but who cares.
It's a clock that came out of a dusty closet to provide wonderful
memories.
One of our favorite clocks is a $10 garage sale find made in Germany, an art deco style wall clock with the same weight-driven movement as a Cuckoo clock. It runs accurately and chimes twice per hour without fail. Its strike is a bit loud and my grandson once asked if we weren't irritated by it, but no, we like its Germanic personality.
When you are shopping for clocks on Ruby Lane, keep in mind that you will wind it and listen to it. A 24-hour clock may be too demanding while an eight day movement is just
right. You can also find clocks that run longer without winding. As for chimes and strike volume, be sure you know in advance what it will do. We once owned a triple decker that was simply too loud anywhere in the house. It would wake the dead, as they say. You want a clock you can live with over the long haul.
We now focus on buying and selling art pottery. It is beautiful to
look at, as is art glass, sculpture and other collectibles. However,
by the mere fact that they are constantly moving and performing,
however quirkily, clocks are unique among the decorative items you can
add to your home. They will truly become members of your family and
develop a history of their own. Personally, our house would feel empty
and we wouldn't be happy without them.
We invite you to visit Drury House Antiques or McGuire's Clocks, two of the many shops on Ruby Lane selling antique clocks, or find art pottery at author Jack Becklund's shop, The Pottery Nuts.
