SHOP SPOTLIGHT: JONARA BLU

Who are we? Aloha! My name is Jamee and Jonara Blu Maui is my fun little jewelry company stranded with me on the island of Maui :) I create fresh and funky beaded jewelry with an island twist but specialize in romantic, feminine beach wedding jewelry with an organic appeal.

I started creating my first jewelry pieces when only 9 years old. My babysitter would bring her beads to my house and let me bead along with her to my hearts content. Then one day she gave me the shoe box full of beading supplies and said they were mine to keep. I still remember the excitement I felt as the new owner of the little colorful candy like wonders. They brought me so much joy over the years and ever since then I have not lost my fascination for beads, gemstones and all things sparkly.

As a resident of Maui since 1992, I have appreciated the inspiration this beautiful island has played in my jewelry making hobby. It has brought me much joy and has been great therapy over the years...and even offered me the opportunity to do some part time work for another Maui artist while my son was a toddler. I have always been involved in some kind of art..whether drawing classes, pottery, or painting..I even taught children's art classes the first year I was married. Then about 8 years ago and with a little more experience under my belt in both technique and business, I ventured out and began creating jewelry for the public via local art galleries, boutiques and craft fairs...and finally in May of 2003 I launched my online shop here at Ruby Lane.

Escaping into my little world of creating whenever possible, I find enjoyment and tranquility as I transform bits of earth and sea into beautiful, feminine (with just the right amount of funky) pieces of wearable art. Inspiration is easily found in the amazing island that surrounds me...sparkling rays of sunlight bouncing off the blue ocean, playful waves that toss about an array of colorful shells, green palm trees blowing in the trade winds, majestic and vibrant sunsets ... and of course all with the unique feminine touch every woman can appreciate.

I feel so fortunate that very often my jewelry can be seen delicately gracing the neckline of Maui's many beach brides, as well as women all over the world on one of the most special days of their life.

I welcome custom orders and promise to listen to your needs and communicate well...and hope to make a friend along the way :) Your order *will* be handled in a professional manner and with a personal touch.

Each piece of jewelry is strung with the utmost care and beads are hand-picked for quality. I've had fun creating and want you to have fun wearing my creations!

ARTISAN SPOTLIGHT: KAREN SUGARMAN

As an interior designer on Boston's posh Newbury Street, Karen Sugarman was heralded for her spectacular use of color, proportion and attention to detail. These skills have now transitioned into her newest venture. . .jewelry design. After her family was transferred in 2004 from Boston to Arizona, the designer who had previously specialized in classic interior design and historic renovation, had no historic properties to transform. With the plethora of "Arizona Tuscan" design in place, Karen decided not to add another log onto that fire.

When she was not working on projects for clients in Boston, she decided to revise an old necklace in her jewelry armoire. The idea for a new necklace was inspired by the one she had brought back from Paris several years ago. "Although that one was lovely, I always felt it needed to be more bountiful and creative. My first prototype was a floral design. The lush bouquet format confirmed my idea and a completely new design was born. If interior design was my first love, beautiful jewelry was my second."

When designing a necklace, Karen incorporates differing values of each colorway which allows for versatility in blending with many clothing options. Her works of art are infused with unique gemstones, pearls, vintage beads and Czech beads. The majority of her designs are constructed from either sterling silver or gold vermeil thus eliminating most jewelry allergies. Her jewelry creations look stunning with everything from blue jeans to ball gowns.

ROE SMITH - OPAL MOON JEWELRY

Handmade Designer Jewelry with Gemstones....that is what I am about, that is what I do, and that is how I define what I love to do..

I do not know if it is just "a woman thing" or what, but as far back as I can remember anything "shinny and sparkly" caused a tingling sensation in my heart. After working 17 years in a law office and creating leaded glass windows and doors in my free time, I finally found the courage to leave my job at the law firm and pursue a more "creative" venture. After completing my first bracelet, I set aside my stained glass tools and began designing beaded jewelry. And I am still loving every minute of it! That was nine or ten years ago and Opal Moon was born. Opal Moon is me, Roe Smith. And in my small studio with my unconditionally loving cats at my feet, I design and create each piece of jewelry with love and gratitude for the opportunity to do what I love to do!

My handcrafted mostly one-of-a-kind jewelry is intended to make women feel more beautiful and alive. Each piece of Opal Moon jewelry is created with an attention to detail and design, using the most unique gemstones, handmade artisan lampwork beads and components available. I am passionate about my work and motivated by the favorable responses from my customers.

Opal Moon jewelry is created with precious and semi-precious gemstones, pearls, coral, crystal, glass, shell and handcrafted artisan lampwork beads. I use sterling silver, high quality gold vermeil (14 to 24kt gold over sterling silver) gold filled, brass, copper and some gold components. I sometimes incorporate vintage and antique pins, components, buttons and pendants into my designs. These are from my "Somewhere in Time Collection". I also have a collection called "All of Everything", where I use multitudes of colored gemstones, pearls and beads. My style is "no particular style at all" -- sometimes fun and funky, many times delicate and dainty, occasionally earthy and warm, and always contemporary, classic and unique.

One further note, I LOVE to do custom work, so always know that I am available if there is something in particular that you desire.
